This volume is devoted to More's principal humanist writings other than his Latin poems and Utopia. It contains the first truly critical edition and a vigorous new English translation of More's four influential Latin letter-treatises on rhetoric, religious and social reform, and the methodological framework of Renaissance humanism. It also contains a entirely new text and translation of More's Historia Richardi Tertii.

"Readers . . . owe much to the scholars who have put this monument together."—Richard F. Hardin, Albion

"The editor's introductory remarks on 'the Erasmian reform' repay reader's attention. Kinney's care in distinguishing More's position from that of Erasmus in especially thoughtful and timely. Kinney also is to be congratulated for the discovery of a new text of the Historia Richardi tertii, which is appended along with a translation and commentary. The textual history of More's influential vilification of 'the Protector' and regicide cannot be rewritten now without this edition. In Defense of Humanism truly is a credit to the creditable More project."—Peter Iver Kaufman, Church History

"More's occasionally cruel wit, his lawyer's tricks and pacing, his engaging anecdotes . . . promote a more dynamic, problematic, and wounding program than the serene and classical body of hopes and assumptions many have recently associated with the word ‘humanism'. . . . Those with an interest in More are in Kinney's debt: this is a humane, learned, and helpful work that makes available documents central to any study of humanism in England."—Anne Lake Prescott, Renaissance Quarterly

"Kinney's work unquestionably surpasses that of his predecessors in linguistic learning and editorial competence."—G.R. Elton, English Historical Journal

"Kinney has done us a great service by bringing these texts to us, and in so readable and richly supported a fashion."—John N. Wall, Review of English Studies
