Modern architecture, on holiday

Our post last week that featured YUP staff vacation photos inspired one of our colleagues to share with us an additional trove of architectural shots that were taken during travels over this past summer.  Her journey through the country’s mid section — Indiana, Wisconsin — resulted in beautiful shots of buildings by architectural greats such as Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, and Frank Lloyd Wright, among others.  Columbus, Indiana, one of her stops, has been called by Smithsonian Magazine a “veritable museum of modern architecture.”  The American Institute of Architects ranked it 6th in the nation for architectural innovation.  She also got to visit  Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin, the landmark estate that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for his own use and situated in the verdant, undulating landscape of the midwest.

Here’s a slideshow of some select images from her album:

As we looked admiringly and enviously through these photos, we found ourselves exuberant with thoughts and free associations about buildings and their designers, and ran to numerous titles in the (frankly) spectacular library of Yale University Press books on modern architecture.  We’ve gathered into another slideshow some recent standouts from the pile of books we pulled off our shelves, here:
