A retrospective exhibition of the work of American artist Carl Andre (b.1935) has just opened at Dia:Beacon. If you can get there: do; we intend to. If you can’t, this coverage on the Huffington Post features a lovely 10-minute video that includes an insightful conversation with Yasmil Raymond, the exhibition’s curator and author of the accompanying exhibition catalogue. The show is groundbreaking in that it covers Andre’s full output – though best known as a sculptor, he is also an accomplished poet. His writing evinces a strong relationship to his three-dimensional work; while the poetry is at turns narrative, historical, or autobiographical, it is also a striking visual display – in the tradition of concrete poetry, Andre used words like physical objects to create shapes or patterns on a page.
