"Épocas y avances is indeed innovative in its premise of teaching grammar and literature through history. It takes students beyond the typical dry grammar-book fare, all the while urging them to develop and practice a myriad of skills in an interesting and meaningful way. Importantly, as well, it prepares students for future, higher-level courses in history, culture, literature, and literary history, as much within a Spanish degree as in other areas of study."—Hispania

Intended for intermediate- to advanced-level students, Épocas y avances uses a unique communicative-humanistic approach to second language acquisition. Through a series of original readings and related activities Épocas enhances linguistic proficiency while emphasizing important aspects of the history, literature, art, society, geography, language, and culture of Spain and Latin America. The interdisciplinary content of Épocas is designed to:
  • Provide specific tools to generate optimized language production.
  • Reinforce the main skills of language learning, including oral and written comprehension and production.
  • Enable students to encounter, examine, and acquire new vocabulary and linguistic structures.
  • Show students the importance of some of the major civilizations and social processes throughout history that influenced and shaped the language and culture of Spain and Latin America as we know them today.
  • Offer a complete, intellectually stimulating, and academically challenging tool for awakening a general interest in the humanities and enriching students' personal  interaction with other cultures.
  • Give students ample opportunity to explore the diversity of other peoples and cultures in   more detail, thus preparing them for their role as global citizens.

"I liked the concept of these materials. I think both culture and literature are very well blended in with the linguistic components. I find the contents very interesting and appealing to anyone, but more specifically to those who are taking cultural and literature courses as well. It's a fantastic book to familiarize students not only with the target language, but also with its historical context."—Professor Manuel Galofaro, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Hofstra University

"Épocas y avances provided textual and audio material that kept the interest of a superior independent study student focused for an entire semester."—Dr. Teresa R. Arrington, Department of Language and Literature, Blue Mountain College

"Combined approach to culture easy to adapt for use in different courses."—Dr. Teresa R. Arrington, Department of Language and Literature, Blue Mountain College
